This is the kind of memoir that will be palatable and engaging for a far broader audience than just culinary aficionados and even for those who have heard the name ‘Momofuku,’ telling a story of an underdog and his struggles both toward success and toward his own identity and place in American society. He is not afraid to reveal his shortcomings in full and the errors that he made in creating his own success. Obviously, he has provided his own picture of his rise and rise at Momofuku – but his wit, humour and self-deprecation made the memoir deeply engaging and insightful. I enjoyed spending time with David Chang, in a way that felt wholly unexpected. In his memoir, Eat a Peach, Chang tells a story far deeper and broader than just a straight line to success, delving into his struggles with bipolar disorder, his learning journey in adapting his management and leadership style and outlines the success of his empire as a story of luck and chance as much as keeping a finger on the pulse of culinary trends and the evolving culinary landscape. In 2004, Momofuku Noodle Bar opened in a tiny, stark space in Manhattan’s East Village. With Eat a Peach, he puts words to so many of the things we all feel, sharing generously of his own journey so we can all benefit in the process.’. Since then, he has added multiple other locations, two Netflix shows and a podcast to his empire, published a cookbook and won an array of awards and accolades. David is a personal hero - funny, wise, humble, and self-aware. An outcropping come suddenly to life as several heads rose at once, aristocratic noses pointed into the breeze. Except for the rhythmic motion of a number of jaws and the occasional flick of an ear or twitch of a lamb unable to be still for long, even in sleep, they appeared to be an outcropping of pale stone. Their summer-shorn fleece turned milky white by the moonlight, a large flock of sheep had settled for the night in one corner of the meadow. The bushes along the fence bottom, highways for those too timid to brave the open fields, rustled once and then were silent as some nocturnal creature went about its business. Each blade of grass, toasted golden brown by two months of summer heat, had a thin black replica stretching out behind it. I'm continuing to add links and citations, but I wanted to put out what I have-which is still quite thorough-in time for Eyes Wide Shut's 20-year anniversary. To avoid rehashing what's already been extensively discussed by others, I've focused primarily on my own observations and interpretations-although much research was required to understand the film's many facets. While written purely from my own interest and not for profit, I've excluded many ideas with the intention of expanding it all into a book-which would be for sale-so, stay tuned. So, this article is my contribution to the ongoing Stanley Kubrick film analyses swirling around out there. I've been haunted by the film since I first saw it upon its release in 1999, and have studied it in an attempt to understand it. Eyes Wide Shut, more than any other movie, gave rise to my interest in cinema as a compelling storytelling medium. |
